You can't buy assault rifles in the US though, otherwise everyone would be running about with m-16s and ak-47s. The types of people that do this are your criminal/gang member types that wouldn't give a shit about gun laws anyway.
You absolutely don't want to end up like the UK though, if some tooled up asshole kicks off here, he or she can do whatever the hell they like until the police armed response unit gets their fingers out their arses and turns up to neutralize the threat. Carrying something as harmless as a folding pocket knife with a locking mechanism will get you arrested, so I guess you could sing god save the queen at them really loudly or something. I'm still waiting on the categorization of narwhal body parts as dangerous weapons myself.
