@6: as for gaming, it highly depends on what you understand under workaround.
For example, I am from Slovakia. Slovakia is a modern and advanced country with talented scientists and thus a good scientific literature.
However, we are relatively small nation, with population just about 5 millions. Thus, whether one wants to read a scientific study or publish a scientific study, it's much better to do so in English, as there is much bigger community.
But, does that mean, that by learning and using English language, we're working around the fact, that our country is small?
I wouldn't say so. We're just approaching broader community, with appropriate tools. That's all about it, we still have our own rich culture and literature, which is here to satisfy people who don't speak English, as learning a language is bit harder than getting a tool.
And the same goes for Wine. I wouldn't call using Wine a work-around, it's simply using the right software to use things which are not available in our native environment.
As for non-gaming stuff, I won'ŧ comment on that, as I don't see any rational logic behind your last statement.
