I justified Alex being given a weapon for a very simple reason. Her uncle.
Her uncle, you'll remember, is the king's brother. He's used to living in the king's shadow. His voice even makes him sound a little bitter about it. He's trying to make sure that his daughter is not completely helpless, because apparently most other people, including her own family, want to just put her out of the way where she can't get hurt. It's a happy accident, then, when she and her uncle's party are set upon, and she's able to actually use the skills her uncle gave her. This isn't some official who's giving her a weapon and expecting her to be a soldier on the front lines; this is someone who doesn't want to see Alex as useless, and who decided to teach her skills to ensure that no one could push her around. And so yeah, it might sound ridiculous, but I can buy it, actually.
