@4, that's true, but the OP never specified the file format they were using, so I assumed they were using a lossless format like wave. If they're not, then your point holds, and as you said, upmixing won't accomplish anything. Of course, we're also assuming the OP knows how to write an audio decoder and encoder, as well as possesses the necessary mathematical knowledge to upmix audio samples in most likely PCM signed 16/24 bit.
