I've just had another idea that might allow for people to do that long killing spree if they wish, but, they'll have to earn it. Watch this!
Not quite sure how old saves would work with this, but... what about a points bank? This might sound a bit complicated, so:
Example: you have one point. You can buy an upgrade, press escape to keep on hand like it works now, or pick a new option/keystroke: store in bank. So, I've got 4 points. I buy an antibiotic, and I store the fourth point in the bank, rather than pressing escape to keep on hand with me right now. Yes, you can store even just one point in the bank, and here's why:
The advantage of this: you lose that point on hand but can save for later: The bank stays with you per save, much like your high score.
When it's time to withdraw, oh no you can't just withdraw. I've got several ideas for how withdrawing could work.
The first: half points for points. So if you've got 10 in the bank, you need five.
Second: more points for points. Got 5 in the bank? You need 10.
The third: level unlocks ala item shop. The more levels you complete, the more withdrawal options you unlock. Maybe start with withdraw one point at level 1, but by level 5 you have stuff like witdraw a quarter, by level 10 you've got withdraw half, and at some point withdraw all. Alternatively, no unlocks at level 1.
