I was able to change the terminal for C++, so likely you've just set it up slightly wrong. There are remote debugging instructions around, however, so it should still be possible to connect VSCode to it even if you can't get VSCode to run it.
You have to tweak launch.json for C++, not sure Python is different. But if you didn't tweak launch.json, that may be your problem.
