If I remember right, there's a helpfile called something like levelling, that will give you a bunch of newbie suggested zones. Pretty sure that's how I found it anyway. Finding zones can be a little tricky, though easier now that there's a blind mode. You can get to some of them by train from Certhan. If you're having any trouble making gold, go to the shop near where Grudar is and say hi, and do the quests there. You always get an item in addition to qp, and you can usually sell it back if you don't want to use it for anywhere from tiny to huge amounts of starting gold.
