Re: nvda: its achievements over the years and its drawbacks
I'm a jaws user here, mostly because it's what I started with, and I'm a luddite when it comes to unnecessarily updating to a newer, or different technology.
One of my biggest problems with NVDA, which I'm not sure anybody else deals with, is the way it recieves key presses. It maps it's keystrokes to the literal letter that windows says was just pressed, where as jaws maps to the physical key that was just pressed. This means that when I switch my keyboard layout between dvorak, querty US, and qwerty Canada, all my jaws keystrokes still require the same finger motions, while in NVDA, I need to use completely different finger motions.
As an example, I'll pick a keystroke that is the same in both screenreaders: say window title = caps+T. While using jaws, I always hold down caps while pressing the physical key that is labeled with a T. While using NVDA, I hold down caps, then try to remember which keyboard layout is active in the given appl ication, then either press the physical key that is labeled with a T, or press the physical key that is labeled with a K.
Does anybody else frequently use multiple keyboard layouts and suffer from this problem?
