Im loving it, keep in mind this is my first day up and running, so these are all just preliminary observations that may be flawed.
system: readynas x6 revision2(4*500gb drives) dlink di-624 router (not gigbit, so could be a bottleneck?) squeezebox3 (wired, most music flac encoded) panasonic saxr-70 axiom m22ti axiom ep600 sub listening bias: ambient electronic, classical, jazz After the inital scan (which is a bit of a drag) I've left my nas quietly running 24/7, the squeezebox boots the instant i need it , I choose an appropriate playlist and relax, so relaxing im going to need a better chair as i'll be spending alot of time in it. i have my unit wired for the mean time, so i cant comment on the wireless funtionality. the good: -my cds are now a real archive rather than out getting trashed day in day out. -nas much quieter than my computer, i sleep 2 meters from it comfortably -huge storage space (4*500gb) -works seemlessly with the squeezebox3 (setup is super simple) -once optimised (readynas forums cover that) file transfers are snappy enough (not firewire speeds but still snappy) -sounds fantastic the bad: -kind of depandant on well thought out playlists or a wifi pda to avoid needing a computer running. i get a little clastrophobic browsing 1 entry at a time. -music folder scans are sloooooow, something comparable to virus scanning, not a big deal if scheduled at night but basically renders the squeezebox disfuntional whilst its taking place. -remote responciveness.... not slow, but kind of sticky when compared to traditional hifi gear. i think a faster ready nas chip or more ram, or more optimised software could definately advantage the system. -its painfully apparant that slimserver is a web application, alot of deep funtionality is there, but....click, pause, page update, click again.... i dont think this is suitable especially when competing with i[whatever] style interface interaction. i think i'll be making my playlists in winamp or something then accessing them with slimdevices. conclusion: the combo has perfomed the job i expected of it flawlessly, no more getting up to change cds, and all without placing any demands on my computer. Ive never owned a system more sophisticated, convenient, compact and efficient that sounds this beautiful. i am a very happy customer. -- teanau ------------------------------------------------------------------------ teanau's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2575 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19215 _______________________________________________ audiophiles mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
