Over the full dynmaic range, the lowest signal levels will be buried in
the noise floor, though not to say inaudible. By turning down the gain
of the DAC for low level output, you can also reduce the noise level
and run the DAC at higher digital levels.

Well I may be missing something here, because there's no Audio entry on
my Player Settings.

If the data is scaled using a hardware 16X8 multiplier, the largest
multiplier available is 255 not 256 which is a 9 bit binary number. The
largest value out would be 32639, not 32767.

They may of course bypass the multiplier when you set the volume to 40,
I'm going to look though the archive to see what information there is,
