Yes, thank you Sean, very helpful. It's good to know that by setting the volume to 40 or disabling the digital volume control, you get the pure 16 bit samples.
I'm now using that mode on 2 SB3s to feed one 16 and one 24 bit DAC. The 16 bit DAC feeds an analogue preamp for volume, the 24 bit DAC upsamples to 192 kHz, has its own volume control and its output goes straight to active speakers. SB3 #3 is in my office and I use the built in volume control and DAC to feed a power amp and speakers from the analogue output. The time to use the SB3's own volume control with the SPDIF output is when you have a higer resolution DAC (20+ bits) with no volume control.
