I'm surprised no one has mentioned room treatments. At the very least
you should get some of those triangular corner treatments for the
ceiling corners. Those have always cleaned up the upper midrange and
highs for me. You ought to peruse http://www.realtraps.com/  There is
great information on that site with reasonably priced products. I
realize you're limited because its a family room but there are some
things you can do without becoming too obtrusive. At least 40% of the
quality of sound in the room is dictated by the acoustics, and 36.7% of
statistics are made up on the spot.
