I got rid of my preamp and am running the SB3->Theta DAC->passive attenuators->amp. This is about as streamlined as a system can be. However, I'm not even sure I really need the passive attenuators. Apparently, the digital volume control issues on the SB3 have been worked out. If the SB3 is your only source, I would suggest going the passive route (no preamp), either by way of attenuators or just use Benchmark volume control (or the SB3, whichever sounds better to you).
