Another reason for wanting the master clock is to send the signal to an
external processor/computer for digital filtering (e.g. xover or DRC).

The SqueezeBox comes up a couple of times. Basically, the idea is to do
all crossover or room correction in the digital domain, and then do the
necessary D/A on each component of the signal, and finally, bi- or
tri-amp passive 2- or 3-way speakers, respectively. Yes, it probably
seems like overkill, but on the other hand, if you're an audiophile and
geek like me, it's cool to have as much control as possible over every
part of the system.
