Been rummaging around the audiofile thread to see if any HW upgrades make any sense. Not that I am unhappy with the SB. I think it is a tremendous value. And I find it remarkable to see this $250 box sitting on top of these $25k stacks of audiofile equipment. Maybe it is that exact juxtaposition that drives people to believe they need to upgrade the HW. You'll always find people justifying spending large sums of money to improve their sound. I guess that is fine, if people want to spend lots of money on stuff like that. Expensive cables, expensive external DACs, differnt power supplies, etc.
I've come across some folks claiming the switch mode power supply that comes with the SB is somehow substandard and I don't see anyone from Slim Devices refuting the claim. Everyone seems to agree that switchmode is inferior to linear. This is not necessarily the case. It can depend on what type of crap exists on the AC mains (waveform, frequency and amplitude), sometimes a switchmode supply can have BETTER performance than a linear supply. This is pretty straightforward EE design. What is the amount and frequency of ripple produced by shlockey switch mode PS at is output under various load conditions? What is the Power Supply Rejection Ratio of the squeeze box? This should be stuff that gets validated by the Slim Devices hardware engineers. Why doesn't anyone from Slim Devices chime in with some engineering data when these discussions are being had on these claims of "it sounds better with this...."? I am surpised that I have seen no one clim that the VFD display doesn't produce audible noise. Everyone knows those things are horrible noise producers.
