Although I agree with your sentiment, mp3's are not going to disappear any time soon. In fact, I bet if you ask 100 people, 80 of them will not even know that mp3 IS a compression scheme. Most people have no clue about "format wars". That said, I have started using FLAC as an archival format, while I still play very high quality mp3's. I use LAME VBR at the highest quality setting, and on my system, I can't hear any difference between FLAC and these mp3's. But, that is my system and my ears.
