For the past few months, I've been using my SB3 with an old Kenwood KR-3600 amp/receiver and a pair of KLH speakers. I found that the SB3's VU meter really fit the old amp aesthetic. Then today I received a Sonic Impact Super T-Amp in the mail (at half the cost of my SB3, I figured I couldn't go wrong). See http://www.thinkgeek.com/electronics/audio/6cd8/ I think I can safely say that the old blue-screened beast will be going into storage.
I'm really impressed with this little amp. It has remarkable soundstaging and clarity, better than any amp I've ever heard, and it's made my otherwise-not-so-extraordinary speakers sing. It is a bit on the bright side though, and I'm hoping that will go away with more use. I've thought of pairing it with a tube pre-amp to warm the sound up a bit, but I haven't been able to decide on anything - and I worry about losing that clarity. Also, it seems hard to find affordable tube pre-amps that have built-in phono stages.
