Not quite.

What I was trying to say is that recording with a peak level as low as
-12dB, and then normalising, would give perfectly acceptable results.
This doesn't mean that you shouldn't record at higher levels if you
want to. As it happens, I tend to aim for peak levels around the -3dB
mark (and then normalise). But that's probably a psychological legacy
of many years using analogue tape.

The actual peak level you get really isn't that important, as long as
it's at least -12dB. The critical thing is that you must avoid digital
clipping at all costs. To be certain of this, make sure your peak
levels never quite reach 0dB.
