I just unpacked and connected my new SB3 and I gotta say, the sound is not knocking me out. To my ears it sounds veiled and closed in, much like an unbroken-in component. Has anyone noticed a change over time in the sound of a new SB3?
Here are my listening conditions: I'm playing FLACs over 802.11b. There is no bitrate limiting and the buffer shows 100%. The SB3's coax out is feeding a Creek OBH-14, which combines a DAC and passive volume control. For comparison, I've been switching the coax between the SB3 and my CAL Delta CD transport, playing the same song. I understand that the levels aren't exactly matched but I still get noticeably more "air" when listening to the CAL. Shouldn't the same bitstream be reaching the DAC, whether it's coming from the CAL or the SB3? I have an Elpac power supply (2a) coming next week. Hopefully, that will make a difference. Meanwhile, I'll keep listening. Functionally, I love the SB3. I just hoped it would sound as good or better than an 8-10 year old CD transport.
