I think you are correct in saying there is no problem with your
squeezebox.  I have tried it vs a similar NAD cd player and it was
clearly inferior.  If you do a search for my previous posts you will
see my comments on this.  In my experience power supply and cable
tweaks will not gain you enough to make a difference.  You will need an
external DAC to match the NAD cd player.  As for the levels, the NAD is
outputting at 2.2 V, which is at the upper limit of the spec, as making
it louder is an advantage during auditions.  The squeezebox is probably
set the the more correct 2V peak output.
