Like you, I became interested in upgrading the DAC after reading all
these threads. I said this elsewhere, but I'll say it again here, I
don't think the DAC makes THAT much of a difference, not in my system,
at least. It may be a little less "fatiguing", but, perhaps, that just
means "not as detailed" as the SB3 analog outs. You can take this with
a grain (o.k. a pile) of salt, because I haven't done careful A/B
testing. However, I'm sticking with the NOS DAC. It was fairly cheap
(<$300 including shipping from H.K.), and it looks cool (on the outside
and inside I might add). What made a MUCH bigger difference for me was
upgrading my amplifier to the Parasound. That change significantly
improved pretty much every aspect of the sound of my system. Like I
said before, the SB3 analog outputs are very good, and that's probably
just because the technology has gotten to the point where it's hard to
screw it up. I think if you are happy with the sound, then just stick
with it.
