First, to answer my earlier question: flat amplitude-frequency response
does NOT mean flat phase-frequency reponse; see the section titled  TIME
OFFSET AUDIBILITY.  

Second, phase changes by themselves are _not_ audible, according to his
test.  What is easily audible (again, according to his test) is
interference caused by phase delays which lead to a non-flat
amplitude-frequency response.
