It would be worth a minute of insurance to measure the output of your
other power supply and make sure that it's really 5v, and that the
center of the connector is positive as opaqueice mentioned.  

Patrick is correct in that overvoltage might break a device, but too
much current capacity won't.

There is a fuse on board (at least on the sb3; I don't have any earlier
units disassembled on my desk at the moment), so a short in the unit
shouldn't damage anything more than what was damaged already to cause
the short, if that makes sense.  

It's a fancy fuse that's supposed to also blow if it sees too much
voltage, but you shouldn't take that as an excuse to do anything crazy.
:)  Since it is a fancy surface-mount fuse though, it's not considered
user-replaceable.

Also I should mention if you haven't considered it, we do have exact
replacement power supplies on the web site for $15.
