I didn't try other frequencies - I can later.  But I don't think that
can be the answer, because if the signal beats against something with
one polarity, it will beat against it just as much with the other
polarity as well, no?

I agree it's weird about the change in pitch.  I guess it might be that
the response of the speaker to bass is quite asymmetric, so the bass is
just louder in one than the other (which could be what I heard).  That
fits with what you're saying, but if that's it I'm surprised it's such
a big effect...
