Ah, OK - that's possible, although it still doesn't explain what I
heard.  In that case someone that claims to be able to hear the
difference should just take a DC voltmeter and check at the speaker
posts.

Also some amps have a polarity reversal switch, and that's how people
switch back and forth.  Unlike reversing the speaker leads that might
or might not reverse your putative DC offset, depending on where it's
coming from.
