Any chance you could get access to an O'scope?

I set my volume like this:

1. Play a 1khz sine wave on SB. Disconnect speakers.

2. View waveform on scope on SB outs. Increase volume until wave
clips. I noted no clipping on SB out, so I left it on full.

3. View waveform on preamp out. Increase volume until wave clips. Put
a little red dot on face of preamp to note highest allowable position.
Leave preamp volume at that setting for now.

4. View waveform on amp out to speakers (leave speakers disconnected).
Increase amp gain until signal clips. Back off a tad so that wave is
clean. Put a drop of hot glue on gain knob to lock it in place. If
the there are two gain knobs (one per channel) then match the second
channel by voltage, not the shape of the signal.

Hope that helps.
