So is this a modulation effect? Do the higher freqencies cause
artifacts or vibration within the existing speakers that alter the
sound?

Of course the other sad thing is that your ears (and nose) supposedly
never stop growing, so perhaps it's our bigger ears causing a more
effective low frequency response :-)

Does anyone remember the fad in the 80's for attaching semi-cones of
paper to your head to improve the listening experience? Of course the
cheapskates like me got the same effect by cupping our hands behind our
ears.
