Absolutly wonderfull post, answered all and more of what I was after, thanks!!
I've just started looking into the possibility of a dac (benchmark dac1 seems to highly thought of and so on the list to demo), and then later maybe an upgrade in pre-amp as mine may well get out classed. Have heard very good things about the 5103, especially the pre-amp side of it, hence the intrest, two birds with one stone - possibly - dac and pre. As you have experienced it first hand with a SB I guess from your thoughts it may not be the 100% solution to what I was after, however it does sound very tempting to demo with the rather good pre section.... I few dealers, have them 2nd hand, ebay has one at the mo, and still new (end of line) in Aus and Ireland as far as I can work out. Initially I was thinking of shifting from my Arcam AV200 to a stereo pre, but, I think I will keep my eyes open just to see if a bargin priced 5103 turns up.....
