I think it's a mixture of 'old dogs having difficulty with new tricks'
and self-preservation. A lot of these guys feel if they are not laying
miles of cables and other 'obvious legwork' customers will no longer
hire custom install companies. i think that's short sighted reaction.
Firstly if customers feel these guys are not offering all options
including the latest technology, then they may loose the trust of
prospective customers. Also there will always be section of the
population who are happy to pay someone to sort it out regardless of
whether we are talking plumbing, AV or housecleaning. If the entry
pricepoint for whole house audio goes down, there's only going to be
more of these customers. I guess it boils down to changing from a
business that does a few REALLY EXPENSIVE installs a year to one that
does lots of cheaper simpler ones is not something that appeals to some
of these guys.
