I can't vouch for the sound quality of the amp I linked to. If you have
$300 to spend I would go for the Parasound Zamp. I think the Dr. Amp is
a UK thing, so that may be more convenient if you're there.

Signal sensing is the feature you need to look for if you don't want to
switch on/off. When music comes through the RCA's it turns on
automatically... and hopefully doesn't shut off if there's a short
pause in the music signal between songs.

As for having it in a void, there are electrical codes that may not
allow power connections outside junction boxes in the wall. That's why
I said it may be easier to just run speaker cables through the wall.

I'm not sure of the RCA length answer. I have a 17' RCA connection in
my car from a Mcintosh CD player to a Mcintosh amp, and at full volume
with no signal there is no audible noise.
