Question: What do you think about the new SD NAS device?

- Awesome! Where can I get one?
- Nice. I'll put that on my wish list.
- Not for me, but it sure is pretty.
- Lame idea. Have the SD folks lost their minds?

My sentiments exactly. It's impossible to find anything, even if
you've been there before. A lot of people, myself included, have given
them a lot of feedback on cleaning up the interface, but I've seen
little of it implemented.

I will say one thing - if you're using their NAS for simple file
storage, there's very little maintenance to be done. I disabled as
many services and software packages as I possibly could on my ReadyNAS
600. I think I tried the included backup utility once, but it didn't
work very well. Now I just use the NAS as a place to store those
backups and it works very well.

Looking at my logs just now, the NAS ran continuously from 2005-10-20
to 2006-03-16, when I did a firmware update and rebooted, and it's been
running continuosly since then. That's exactly one reboot in eight
months, and it's never been powered down. The only alerts in the logs
are two times that it went on UPS power during that time period.
