Wow! I can't believe how much improved the digital output is when you do
this analog mute trick... and I have an OBJECTIVE measure of the
improvement!

I have a wireless doorbell repeater in my house (Heath XL-6166-RX-A),
and I've noticed that, when playing certain music (for example- In
Trutina by Hayley Westenra), the doorbell always rings when she hits
two high notes, and the entire track sounded pretty horrible in my
system, even through my Benchmark DAC-1. I have attributed it to
"digititis" and assumed it was a flaw in *MY* system... so much so,
that I have been auditioning Tube Pre-Amps, to try and rectify it. I
just auditioned a friend's Art Audio VPS DM Pre, and lo and behold, it
totally eliminated that "digital glare" and did NOT trigger the
doorbell. I had concluded that a Tube Pre was what my sytem was
lacking, and was actually about to buy a Modwright SWL 9.0 today
(almost $2000!) Fortunately, reading about this Analog Mute trick
(PreAmp Volume Control setting at 63), I tried it, and to my
amazement... NO MORE "digititis" whatsoever, and no more triggering of
my wireless doorbell. I have left everything else untouched and
switched back and forth a few times with the mute trick, and the effect
is 100% reproducible. This has taken my system to the next level, and
just saved me ~$2000!

Now, this begs the question (for Sean I suppose), WHY does this work???
It certainly sounds like there could be a permanent software fix for
this issue.
