I use a SB3 with a Yamaha DSP-AX757SE. While I am not the most
discerning of listeners, I am surprised by the difference in the sound
between using the DAC in the SB3 with the analogue output and using the
DAC in the Yamaha with the optical output on the SB3.

In my experience, using the DAC in the Yamaha produces a brighter, more
in-yer-face sound. For example: Cymbals seem brighter and sometimes
compete with vocals. Both my partner and I agree on this. However,
there's also a slight volume level difference which maybe accentuates
the effect. I didn't do a serious listening test, I just connected both
the analogue and digital cables at the same time and switched between
them using the Yamaha's remote control.

I don't think either sound is "correct", just "different". And I am not
sure what other factors other than the DACs could influence the sound to
such a degree.

I've settled on the brighter sound of the Yamaha DAC for several
reasons:

1. I think I prefer the sound and my partner certainly does.
2. I was getting some audio breakthrough from the TV on the analogue
cables.
3. The DTS encoded music I have can be played since the data is passed
straight through the SB3 to the Yamaha.
