That's what I would recommend.  The fact is (flame suit on) most modern
solid state amps are very, very, very good.  The differences between
them are often nuance, if they are there at all, despite different
design strategies.  A serious reviewer I know said that, simply,
amplification has been solved.

Not, that is NOT the case with speakers.  Speakers vary tremendously. 
On a budget, I would sink as much as possible on speakers, get a good
source, and then worry about your amp (and you have to, to a degree,
based on your speaker's needs).
