In response to a related post of mine re: length of interconnect cables, DCtoDaylight said this:
"It's been reported elsewhere, that the Transporter controls the volume in the digital domain, or before the DAC. As a result it cannot suffer from the high output impedance issues that passive pre's sometimes have." Could this be part of the puzzle here? This is over my low flying technical head, so I dont know.
