Coming back to the topic, I agree with Horizons characterization of
Stereophile and JA, for the most part. But JA is one of the most
technical guys in the audio review business and Stereophile is one of
the first to report on any new technology developments/breakthroughs.
For example, it is the stereophile article on jitter, which helped me
understand this concept and this came 10 or 15 years earlier !!!
(inspite of so much literature that are available on the subject). I
dont know how technical other magazines are but I am willing to
tolerate Stereophile's pandering to the high-end manufacturers for this
only reason. Actually, I have learnt to pick up on the budget's
components which they 'damn with their condescension'. It is almost
like a clue for the budget minded, but makes the snobs and over-priced
high-end manufacturers feel comfortable.
(Thanks Paul, I am looking a better 'pure digital amplifier' in the
$1-$2K category to replace the Panny with. But nobody seems to be
taking up this bracket yet. Not sure about the Sony receivers)
