Interesting.  Is it reasonable for me to summarise your post to say
that you think it makes more difference by going from passive to active
than by going from active to digital active?  That seems sensible, but I
would be interested to see if anyone had managed to really compare
these.

I do like your comments re volume.  I also have about three settings:
quiet, wife stays in room and wife storms off to another room slamming
the door :D

And your system is reminding me of those old dual-mono pre-amps that
had two volume knobs connected with an elastic band, can't remember who
made them...
