Yes, although I doubt you'll find any standalone DAC today that sounds
much better. It could be considered a "future proofing" feature
though.

Another conceivable use for the word clock might be if you were doing
editing and needed transporter's s/pdif output to be precisely in sync
with some other reference. This "house sync" is often used with video
because you need to sync frame rates - I don't know if it's done in
audio editing.

Finally I could imagine the possibility that one might need to vary the
sample rate on the fly, or use some non-standard rate. For example, I
made some interesting effects once by hooking a sweep function
generator to the word clock input while playing music.
