There are plenty of high end components that don't have balanced
outputs.  In fact, it makes no sense to have balanced outputs if the
overall design of the component isn't balanced internally (except in
the case where you're running long ICs...)

I am fully aware of the fact that lots of high end stuff is single-ended.

I do not, however, understand why a "high end" design uses cheap 1950s connectors when there are much better alternatives. The price to use XLR instead of RCA can't be a significant factor in the product price, so there has to be something I don't understand. I bet inertia has a lot to do with it.

All connectors in any vaguely serious recording studio are balanced. It is needed for the low impedance mic leads, but they are used for all the line level stuff as well.

But this is moving way off topic.
