I KNOW I don't have the gear to hear the subtler differences between SB3 and Transporter, but here are my thoughts.
First off, I have a 1978 Maranatz 2285Be (European blackface edition) with a pair of Marantz HD880s (original components - lows need replacing). I plugged the SB3 into tape 1 and TP into tape 2. I A/B'd back and forth on a variety of pop and rock. (Both players sync'd, volume maxed, FLAC as source.) Impressions are as follows: "Oh man, there's not much difference. I just wasted 1700 bucks. Wait, no, that's wrong. TP seems a little louder. Mids are clearer and more present. Mid-bass on down is much smoother, and there's more of it. And WOW is it a lot punchier - much more in the way of low-end dynamics." As I went back and forth, I realized that the Transporter is simply more musical. SB3 started to sound like a utility device, a computer for reciting bits and bytes. It's a fine sounding box on its own, but after a while, and especially compared with TP, its AM radio. Transporter, on the other hand, loves the music it's assembling. Transporter is -performing- the music. In sum: SB3 shall be my alarm clock. Transporter shall be my music box. And I will love them both. -- flattop100 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ flattop100's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7760 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28056 _______________________________________________ audiophiles mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
