I've been using an SB3 together with Dynaudio Contour 1.3 MKII speakers and a Luxman L-430 integrated amp. Anyway, I have decided to retire the amp and am looking for a good replacement.
Originally i was looking at a DIY KT-88 based PP amp, but I just don't think it will drive these speakers well enough - especially at the bottom end. Next I was thinking about NuForce reference 9 monoblocks as the power handling would be more than adequate, but with such neutral transparent speakers such ad the Dyn's, I thought a bit warmer sounding amp might match better. (I know, can't get much more opposite ends to this spectrum that those two choices - evidence to my confused state...) I am listening in almost all FLAC and otherwise high quality VBR MP3. This system does not do double duty for home theater or anything else, and I want to trend to the minimalistic. I guess this thread is more about matching the speaks with a good amp, but if there is any advice as to good alternatives (especially from those familiar with these speakers), as well as the preamp question, I'd really appreciate it! The other question I have is whether to go with purely a power amp (which is my preference) or if it would be better to have a preamp or integrated with the SB3. I've aspirations of getting a Transporter at some point which would solve this question, but I don't have a solid timeframe for that yet. I will not be using an external DAC.
