Until recently, I also found most internet radio very disappointing when
it comes to sound quality. Even the 128kb/s MP3 stations were poor.

Then I read somewhere about internet stations that stream in AAC Plus,
claiming that their audio quality was much higher, even at bitrates as
low as 64kb/s. I found a site called Tuner2 (http://www.tuner2.com)
that lists AAC Plus sites. As a classical music fan, much to my
delight, I discovered that Radio Swiss Classic broadcasts a 64 kb/s AAC
Plus stream.

I downloaded VLC for my Mac and was amazed at the quality of the AAC
Plus streams. It sounds far better than any other MP3 Internet stream,
and even sounds better than some of my 128kb/s LAME encoded MP3 filess.
And the programming on Radio Swiss Classic is excellent, too.

I believe Winamp will play AAC Plus, and that there is also a plug-in
for Windows Media Player.

Once you have a player, see:

http://www.radioswissclassic.ch/nav/frameset.php?lang=en

and try the link that says 'CD-Qualität'

As I am in China for a few months, I don't have my SB3 with me. But as
soon as I get back, I will install mplayer on my server and see if I can
get AAC Plus streaming to my SB3. (Perhaps native AAC Plus on the SB3
might be a good idea one day).

(PS AAC Plus even supports surround sound. There is a site called
Bjorn Lynne - Astronavigator [Electronic] that broadcast surround sound
at 160kb/s. Would be worth a listen, just for fun).
