I agree. My 250w recommendation is pretty useless and without context. I just wanted to spark some creative thinking before upgrading a perfectly good DAC. I also have to agree with mudlark. I have a tri-amp stereo system with DIY speakers and active crossover: 150w woofer, 150w midrange, 80w tweeter for a total of 380w per channel on 8ohm. Unless I show off (happens sometimes) I listen music at a moderate volume. This loudness level feels similar to the one of my old (still quite good) speakers connected to a decent 120 w amp set at a reasonable 1/4 of volume. Yet there is no comparison. The tri-amp system sounds full range and effortless. Feels like live sound-the-singer-is-there. I could keep going with the differences but I stop here. I am also convinced that the jump in quality is due to the use of an active crossover VS. a passive one since this translates in maximum electrical dampening of each driver. So my 250w recipe is definitely simplistic. Another data point: The speakers that inspired my latest tri-amp ones had a special passive crossover and custom drivers (this guy is not your ordinary DIYer, he actually owned a loudspeaker company). Every detail, there were many, was optimized for maximum dampening, minimum diffraction (minimum baffle), no specific resonant internal lengths, way oversized magnet (more flux = more dampening), etc. Their sound was just amazing. The amp behind these speakers is a 400W Audio Research. Coincidence? I think not. If you dampen it takes more to get going. To make a (not particularly good) parallel you can drive @30 mph two cars, not a the same time ;-) a beat up Chevy Nova with old absorbers and a new Audi A8 (or Chevy Impala i you will) on a road full of holes. Chances are that the A8/Impala will command the road while the Nova will bounce around hopelessly. -- arge ------------------------------------------------------------------------ arge's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6155 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28700 _______________________________________________ audiophiles mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
