Hmmm, maybe time to upgrade your stereo? 

Try listening to acoustic music with vocals (Jazz, Rock, whatever) and
listen to the high notes (eg. cymbals) and voices.

When I started dabbling with putting my music on a PC, I tried a lot of
different (cheap) soundcards, using FLAC as source, I found that the PC
sound was wolly and unengaging compared to the CD player. Getting a SB3
solved everything and it was way more convenient.

I do use high quality VBR MP3's for party music though. I have a
Pioneer A-676 and a PC specifically for that purpose.
