It is not necessarily obvious, well at least not to me.

I don't much care if somebody thinks a question of mine is stupid. If I
want to know the answer, I usually just ask it anyway!

It's conceivable the SB3 software/firmware attenuation code might use
the extra 8 databits in a clever non-standard manner internally, and
send a different, standardized 24-bit signal from its S/PDIF output. 

You see, I do have a 24-bit external DAC, that I wish to use with an
SB3.

So a direct answer here would be great for me (please): 

If I use an SB3 with my external 24-bit DAC, will full 16-bit signal
resolution be maintained (no lost bits) within the volume range 100
through ~40?
