I have run this test and got the less than adequate results. One thing
I didn't mention is that my original acid test was playing a CD. The CD
player fed the Yamaha as pre-amp and then passed the signal through to
the NAD amp. The resulting sound quality could only be duplicated by
using either the digital optical or the digital coax output of the SB2.
With the SB2 digital outs the sound was every bit as good as the CD
input (some said better). So I'm not just evaluating louder sound or a
bass-ier sound. I want the SB2 to sound as good as the CD.

Because I'm separating my serious listening from my home theater (and
leaving the Yamaha with the HT), I don't have a way to hook my SB2's
digital outputs to my amp. So I've decided to bite the bullet and buy a
Transporter. I plan to use the Transporter as a preamp and run balanced
cables from it directly to my NAD amp and I take it on faith that it
will match or exceed the sound my CD player was producing.
