Used Spendors, like the S5e, are very good and quite affordable. I think they can be had for around US$1,200 or so, or perhaps a bit less. Cantons are nice, too.
Really, given that almost all speaker manufacturers use third party drivers -- and that, by and large, these drivers are not terribly expensive -- it is one of the shames of high-end audio that better speakers generally aren't available at lower prices.
