You don't lose anything in S/N when you use the SB volume control as long as you don't go below a certain level - which I believe is 40 on the current scale of 0-100. If you search the forum you can verify that number.
So you could buy some attentuators such that with the SB on max volume and with the attentuators in the circuit the volume is as loud as you will ever want.
