Personally, I wouldn't bother with lossless for in-car audio.

For a start, unless you spend a shedload of cash, your in-car audio
system is not likely to be of audiophile quality. Even if it is, the
listening position is likely to be sub-optimal, i.e. sat to one side
(unless you have a McLaren F1!).

And all this is before you even turn the key, at which point you have
engine noise to contend with. Then, when you move off, you have road
noise, wind noise, transmission noise, etc. etc.

I'm fairly picky about my audio (Electroacoustics degree, worked as
sound engineer, have transporter, use flac at home, etc. etc.) but I am
perfectly happy with the mp3 format encoded by lame at using --preset
standard.

In fact, this scenario was the reason for my writing my flac2mp3 script
[1] which converts my flac library to mp3 format purely for use on my
60GB iPod photo which I mainly use in-car.
