1) agreed - but also bass management (oops - heresy), source level
matching, remote control, 
2) depends on rest of the system - especially the gain staging and
impedance (mis)matching. 
3)  In some systems, passive pre's sound terrible (really bad) and yet
great in others.
4) NO!!!!! 
5) There is no such thing! IMHO 
6) Nope - has to work with a lot of material otw waste of money
7) Yes (but only the ones I recorded myself - I KNOW what they sounded
like in the studio! - I made them that way)
8) for amps - yes...for everything else - who knows?
9) I'd say more like 75% - maybe higher (once you get beyond a certain
point of equipment "fidelity" - whatever the hell that is). I know  a
few folks disagree but I think that DRC (and obviously a good source,
amp and speakers) makes the difference between a system that is OK and
one that is "great"
